Charleston
We arrived in Charleston the 1st of February. It was an eight hour drive from Washington DC. When we got there we didn’t have enough energy to go see any music that night. We ended up at a bar watching the Super Bowl. We stayed with a lovely couple who had an enchanting house right off the highway about 10minutes away from downtown Charleston.
I first day we drove to the city center. We walked through the market and around downtown it was raining but the change in temperature was unbelievable. It was 20 degrees warmer and the three of us couldn’t be happier about it. We visited the slave market museum. We also went to the waterfront park. It was our first stop in the south and it felt like we were on a different planet. The vegetation, weather, buildings and people where all completely different. That night we tried to find a place to watch live music and it was surprisingly difficult. We ended up at a dive bar in a neighborhood that made all three of us uncomfortable. The band was an indie rock band and the place was full even though it was a Monday night. The second day we went to the Magnolia Plantation in Charleston. I felt as if we had stepped out on to a movie set. We took a tour of the house which was nice but nothing compared to the grounds. There were acres of beautifully kept gardens. The property was next to a winding river and we picked a perfect sunny day to see it. Charleston was one of my favorite cities in the south the mansions by the water and picturesque alleys. Even though on several occasions I got ripped off for parking I would definitely go back.
